Elijah was one of the greatest prophets for the Bible. Nevertheless, he was still a man and succumbed to fear when he learned that his life was threatened and that he was the last prophet.
There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?" He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."
It is uncertain whether his fear was for his own life or for the people of Israel. As the last prophet he may have wondered who would speak the will of God to his people. That alone may have made him fearful not for himself but for the sake of Israel.
His Lord and God was there with him on the mountain that he ran to hide at. There, the Mighty Counselor brought comfort to His star prophet - Elijah.
The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
The Lord was saying to Elijah that He was not be distant from him and would not forsake him. Instead God was saying to Elijah that He was with him and controlled the situations so he, Elijah, should not fear. At that Elijah knew that the Lord was not just with him but would also continue to be with Israel no matter troubles came. Come storms, earthquakes, fires, or whatever the Lord would care for His people and not forsake them.
The following scripture introduces Elijah’s replacement, Elisha, whom Elijah was to mentor. Elisha would become another great prophet serving the Lord as a voice of His will. In that succession God was subtly impressing (or whispering) on Elijah that his people would continue to be looked after.
God is with Israel even to this day as He is with the Christians. For those that hear His whisper He will take them under His wing and care for them as long as they continue to honor and obey Him. That secret was given to the Israelites and then to the the rest of the world through Jesus. |
