We have five physical senses. We see with our eyes, hear with our ears, smell with our nose, taste with our tongues, and feel with our skin. Generally it is difficult for us to accept anything that we cannot sense. Our visual and tactile senses influence our beliefs more than any of the rest.
Of all our senses the ones that we are most likely to be influenced by are also the ones that we are easily manipulated with. Imagery and physical stimuli are powerful in bending our wills, especially the ones of the sexual and violent kind. Logic and reason are feed by the weakest of senses - hearing. Hearing is often overruled by the more dominate sensory inputs.
One of Jesus’ disciples had difficulty with the two dominate senses as written in the book of John.
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
Thomas would not believe the words of his fellow disciples. He could not accept or conceive that his master had really risen from the dead. This even after Jesus performed many miracles and spoke of His death and resurrection several times. Thomas had even been empowered by the Holy Spirit at Jesus’ command and performed miracles by his own voice and hand. His strength was in the moments with the Lord Jesus experiencing God’s power firsthand. It was only when Jesus appeared after death in physical form and had Thomas feel the places where He was pierced that Thomas really believed Jesus was the Son of God Most High.
Sadly many remain unbelievers as they need the physical proof that God exists. They are most susceptible to the trickery of the enemy (demons). They will more than likely experience ghostly or alien phenomenon putting their faith in what they experience and not in the one true God. The enemy is eager to take our attentions away from God’s voice so they may put us in the grave taking away our chance at eternal life.
God does not just talk to the faithful but to all. Believers and unbelievers alike are spoken to by His still small voice. It is up to the person to listen to what is often referred to as their conscience. Those who hear the Lord and believe without seeing are said by Jesus to be blessed. They will eventually see the Lord face-to-face in the next life. |
