 Our Daily Bread

When the Israelites left Egypt and wandered in the desert they did not have a good renewable source of food. If it were not for the Lord God sending food to them many would have died in the desert. Every day the Lord sent a dew to the ground that became a bread-like edible substance. The book of Exodus has this written.

Then the Lord said to Moses, "I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days."

The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.

In addition to the bread from Heaven the Lord sent flocks of quail for the Israelites to catch in nets and eat. God took care of His people so that they would live each day worry free. They could then keep their focus on following God’s decrees and commandments.

In the New Testament Jesus teaches his disciples to pray.

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples."  He said to them, "When you pray, say: "'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.  Give us each day our daily bread.  Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.'"

In the prayer Jesus gave them He tells them to pray for their daily bread. He was not specifically talking about food. Rather He was referring to the Lord providing for a man’s need each day in every way. It would be a provision not just for our physical needs as manna was but also our spiritual needs.

Jesus explains further what the bread is that he is talking about in later scripture.

"I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever."

The Lord Jesus was talking of spiritual matters and in no way of actual cannibalism. If someone feeds on getting to know Jesus intimately and passionately obeys His commandments and teachings then the Lord will live in that person. They will be transformed into a new being and will become clean in His and His Father’s site. Therefore they will have entrance into Heaven when their time comes to leave their flesh.

Jesus also warned in the Gospels using the bread analogy about bad teachings that would corrupt and lead to death.

"Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."  Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

The Pharisees and Sadducees taught a perversion of the laws and principals given through Moses by God. If the Israelites consumed their teachings and became like them then they would be led down the path to death eternal. Jesus came on the scene to steer those who would hear and listen to Him away from those poisonous teachers of the Law.

Pray for your daily bread each and every day. Understand when you do that you are praying for the your physical and spiritual needs to be fulfilled. The Lord God will provide for both as He loves us. Jesus is the answer to all our needs.
